This test pressing was made sometime between early to
mid June with the
runout etching of "OCTO 1". There is also a malformed OCTO 1
stamp on the A side. There may have been more runout
etchings but this is all we know at the moment.
On June 29th 1970, Octopus Records was dissolved and Fly
Records came into existence.
Because of this change, the OCTO 1 catalog number
was changed to BUG 1, and "Jewel" was replaced by "Is It Love" for
the eventual single.
The text on both sides of this first test pressing were written by Marc himself (not including the
A & B). |

White Swan Side 2a - Jewel Side 2b - Summertime Blues Recorded at Trident Studios, St. Anne's Court, Soho, London. Produced by Tony Visconti
This acetate was made sometime around late May or early
June of 1970.
Strange that the acetate is on American media. Were the
Master recordings sent over to America for Acetates to be made. Then
those acetates sent back to the UK for Marc's approval and use.
Marc Bolan wrote everything on the labels including the
original mistake of 'Ride A Swan', instead of 'Ride A White Swan'.
Marc gave this acetate to Whispering Bob Harris of
Radio 1 and OGWT fame.
Marc expected it to be released on the 28th September.
It sold for £2,200 at auction on 26th January 2021
These two pictures across are from someone's
imagination. The single was printed and sold in January 2023 and is a
million miles from official. The real single or labels never existed but may
have looked similar to these (although I personally would have used
OCTO-1 rather than OCT-1).

The first release under the "T. Rex" name :NOTE:
Contrary to popular opinion and belief, the first pressings used the mustard coloured labels. Fly had bought a stock of labels cheaply from Immediate, who went bust at around the same time that Fly began. Fly used those lilac coloured Immediate labels when RaWS started selling big, to save money.
The southern Irish edition of the single was released on the Regal Zonophone label.

The first issues of this single came on the standard mustard coloured label with the words "Fly Records" inside a circle at the top of the label. During this first pressing the label was changed to a
Roger Dean drawing of a hovering white/silver fly on a black label.
Having looked at all my copies of Hot Love, I came across a copy that has a different Lacquer number. I checked the length of the playing surface
(sadly I no longer have a record player) and it was decidedly shorter than the normal copies.

If you look across you will see that the matrix number for this is TON-2.
The preceding album, TON-1, was a compilation album entitled "The Big Ones" featuring 4 of the biggest artists on the Fly label, Procol Harum, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Joe Cocker, and The Move. Along with a track each from 3 other artists.
These two albums were not endorsed by Marc Bolan because he was now T. Rex and wanted to distance himself the the older material of
Tyrannosaurus Rex and Steve Peregrin Took*.

Side 2a - Fire - The Crazy World of Arthur Brown Side 2b - The Wind Cries Mary - Jimi Hendrix Experience
No doubt released to cash in on Marc's sudden popularity. Below the UK edition is the New Zealand edition on the Polydor label with the record number 2058-100.
The New Zealand edition has a few errors. The back cover has "Jimi Hendrix Experence" - note the missing "i" in Experience. The labels "A" and "B" sides are reversed to what's on the cover. The John's Children track Desdemona is two words rather than one.
Here's a copy with slightly altered text alignment of the music publishers on the "A" side.
Thanks Bobby for the single and sleeve pics ;)

Rumour has it that Rick Wakeman played the piano

| Side 1 - Jeepster - 4:10 Side 2 - Life's A Gas - 2:23 Recorded at Trident Studios, London, Advision Studios, London, Wally Heider Studios, Los Angeles, and Media Sound Studios, New York. Produced by Tony Visconti
Only 500 copies of this purple labelled single were produced, and was basically a promo of the upcoming album and came in a plain pink sleeve pictured below the labels from the fan club or a plain white sleeve from the record company. This single came about because of a fault that was found on the original Electric Warrior
album Lacquer (a.k.a. FLY 6 A-1U).
Because of this fault there was no time to get promo's of the album
out to DJ's. So this single was rush released to help the demand for
new T. Rex music. P.S. Thanks to Martin Banger for the pictures of the 4-pronged version,
I didn't know this even existed (insert shocked smiley). Ten of these 4-pronged versions are known to exist.
One of these 4-pronged versions sold on 14th July 2015 on Ebay for

Although the images on this preview single, the release single, and
the album look the same, they are in fact different. OK
different is a bit misleading. The album's label image shows the maximum scene, the
Preview single's label image is cropped a little, and the released single
label image is cropped
the most.

The Lacquer number of side 1 of this album is
6A-2U, this is because a fault was found on the original Lacquer
(6A-1U) after some test pressings were
made and listened to. Side 2 also uses a 2nd Lacquer (6B-2U), the
reason for this is unclear.
The second "side 1" label is a later edition with a crediting alteration on Jeepster. The third "side 1" label has a different crediting alteration.
In Belgium in 1985 an album entitled "T. Rex Greatest Hits" was released

| Marsha Hunt Woman Child album (Marc on backing vocals)
Side 1:-
6 - My World Is Empty Without You - 2:57
Marc is rumoured (and likely) to have played guitar on the album tracks:- "Stacy Grove", "Hot Rod Poppa" and "Desdemona", and also "Hippy Gumbo" the "B" side of the Desdemona single (Track Record 604034). Interesting to note that the LP track is "Hot Rod Pappa",
whereas the single is "Hot Rod Poppa".

Wally Heider Studios, Los Angeles, and Media Sound Studios, New York.
Produced by Tony Visconti
Highest UK chart position: No. 2
Marc didn't want this single released as he had just agreed a deal with EMI to publish new material on his own label. Fortunately it was a big hit so he wasn't as upset as he could have been.
There are at least twelve versions of the centre label:- A solid centre that includes a white "GRUB 1A"

And at least two other alternative pressings of the solid-centred single.
A white "GRUB 1A" and a grey "GRUB 1A" with a double groove around the centre hole. Both these editions have run-out etchings of "5 KT" on both sides. No visible Stampers are evident.

Here's a copy that plays
"Jeepster"
on both sides.
Again this is a 5 KT copy with no Stampers
Here's a special 3D edition
OK maybe not, its a copy with misaligned colours

Not content with a misaligned pushout, Dave got himself a misaligned solid too.
