Single

Side 1 - Telegram Sam - 3:45

Side 2a - Cadilac - 3:50
Side 2b - Baby Strange - 3:08

Recorded at Rosenberg Studios, Copenhagen and
Chateau d'Hierouville Studios, Paris.
Cut at Trident Studios, St. Anne's Court, Soho, London.
Produced by Tony Visconti

It may seem a bit odd that the songs were recorded at
one place and cut at another, hundreds of miles away in
different countries. This was done because Marc was
eager to try different places with different surroundings
for getting new ideas for music and lyrics and/or was
touring the country at the time.

The first single on Marc Bolan's own label with the now
familiar blue and red labels and sleeves. These sleeves
are commonly referred to as picture sleeves when being
sold. They are just a basic thin paper sleeve coloured
blue with the centre missing (so you can see the disk's
label) and a red picture of Marc in the lower half and the
word T.REX in red in the top half.

Highest UK chart position: No. 1

The first picture is of the single sided Trident Studios acetate

The second picture is of the single-sided Apple Studios acetate

Ringo Starr single

Side 1 - Back Off Boogaloo

Produced by George Harrison

:Unconfirmed:
Ringo wrote the song using words Marc had used when
they were chatting to each other.

Point of contention!!!
Was "Back Off Boogaloo" released in the
United States a day earlier than in the U.K.
?
In the U.K. Apple singles were invariably
released on the Friday to get the Saturday trade.
But in the U.S. records were often released on
either Monday or Thursday. There is also the
possibility that it was released 3 days after the U.K.

Hard On Love compilation album

Side 1:-
unsure of track listing but several demos of Marc
are included

Side 2:-
See above

:Note:
This was Track Record's attempt to cash in on Marc's
current success. EMI who Marc had recently signed to
had other ideas and got a court injunction preventing the
albums release.

You will note that 2406 009 has become 2406 101.
Did 009 have 21 tracks and 101 have 20 tracks to try
and circumvent the original injuction?

Hard On Love - 2406 101 track listing:-

Side 1:-
1 - Jasper C. Debussy - 2:26
2 - Lunacy's Back* - 2:20
3 - Beyond the Risin' Sun* - 2:15
4 - Black and White Incident - 1:46
5 - Observations - 2:14
6 - Eastern Spell - 1:28
7 - You Got the Power - 1:49
8 - Hippy Gumbo - 1:54
9 - Sarah Crazy Child* - 3:21
10 - Rings of Fortune* - 2:36

Side 2:-
1 - Hot Rod Momma - 2:58
2 - The Beginning of Doves* - 1:47
3 - Mustang Ford - 1:45
4 - Pictures of Purple People - 2:22
5 - One Inch Rock* - 2:16
6 - Jasmine Forty-Nine - 2:27
7 - Charlie - 1:55
8 - Misty Mist* - 1:32
9 - Cat Black - 1:22
10 - Sally Was an Angel* - 2:43

Track 2 and 3 of side 1 don't seem to have a gap between them,
so it looks like one big track rather than two average ones.

Side 1 - Debora - 3:10

Side 2a - One Inch Rock - 1:40
Side 2b - The Woodland Bop - 1:32
Side 2c - The Seal Of Seasons - 1:43

Produced by Tony Visconti
Recorded at Trident Studios, St. Anne's Court, Soho, London.

Comes with a picture sleeve with a collage of photos of
"The Move", "Procol Harum", and "Joe Cocker"
alongside Marc.
This EP was number two in a set of four comprising the
above mentioned artists.

Echo-101 - Procol Harum:-
1. A Whiter Shade Of Pale
2a. Homburg
2b. A Salty Dog

Echo-102 - Tyrannosaurus Rex
See Above

Echo-103 - Joe Cocker:-
1. With A Little Help From My Friends
2a. Delta Lady
2b. The Letter

Echo-104 - The Move:-
1. Fire Brigade
2a. I Can Hear The Grass Grow
2b. Night Of Fear

All four singles were released at the same time and had
identical front and back covers.

I have a copy of the Debora EP that has C. Fones. (or C. Fores.) etched in
the runouts of the A side. Does anyone know who he/she is ?

An album of similar material from the four artists was
released in Autumn (Fall) of 1972 on the Cube-Contour
label, record number 2870-195 in the UK. The album's
title was "Fantastic Original Hits".

:Note:
A test pressing of the "B" side with a different last track
(
Throat of Winter) was made but discarded in favour of
this version here. This leads me to naturally suspect that
the matrix number of the test pressing was
ECHO 102 B-1U.

standard edition, it has a dated stamp from Fly Records.
This single was given out with the three others in the set in
a cardboard version of the sleeve but with no cutout and
Fly contact information where the cutout should be. All
along with a four page biog on each act and black and
white glossy photograph. Finally, all these loose items are
held together in a thin card wrap around sheet duplicating
the four photographs.
These were handed out to DJ's with compliments from David Ruffell,
the promotion & publicity officer for Fly Records.

Double-album re-package/release of earlier released two
seperate albums "Prophets, Seers & Sages..." and
"My People Were Fair...".
Covers inverted to make it look special / different.

Produced by Tony Visconti

:NOTE:
When it was sold new, it had a DOUBLEBACK sticker
on the Prophets cover (see 3rd picture).

Highest UK chart position: No. 1 :-)

The Cube edition covers are almost identical to the Fly
edition covers with the small exceptions of the number
"4" on the inside covers.
Fly has the albums as TOOFA 3/4
Cube has the albums as TOOFA 3 only.
Also the white band at the bottom of the "My People
Were Fair..." Cube cover is slightly broader, pushing the
artwork slightly higher, thus losing a fraction off the top of
George Underwood's beautiful artwork.

:Note:
The last track of side 2 of the Cube edition is now called
"Scenes Of Dynasty".
I can see Scenescof preparing his Gorgon machine but
I just can't see Scenes Of doing the same lol.

The last two pictures are of a slightly later edition of the Cube version.
Note the absense of "TOOFA" next to the large side numbers.

Produced by Tony Visconti

Highest UK chart position: No. 1 :-)

:Note:
This was the last release of Marc's on the Fly label and
the third to last of any Fly release (The Move's two albums
"The Move" and "Shazam" joined together to form
TOOFA 5/6 would be 2nd to last. And Procol Harum's
"A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "A Salty Dog" joined together
to form TOOFA 7/8 would be the last).
Fly would become Cube in May of 72.

The vinyl record labels shown here are from the original
Fly label and the new "Cube" label.

Also notice the spelling error on side 2, track 2 of the
Cube release. It says "Teepster".

The earliest edition with a "FLY 8 A-1U" matrix had a
different side 1 track listing. Track 4 was originally "The Visit",
and track 6 was originally "Dragon's Ear".

Here's an oddity, I believe this is a test pressing of the Fly
edition, but the runouts are completely out of whack.

Single

Side 1 - Metal Guru - 2:30

Side 2a - Lady - 2:10
Side 2b - Thunderwing - 3:44

Recorded at Rosenberg Studios, Copenhagen and
Chateau d'Hierouville Studios, Paris.
Cut at Trident Studios, St. Anne's Court, Soho, London.
Produced by Tony Visconti

This and the T-Rex Disco Party single are the only Marc
Bolan/EMI singles with no printed demo label. This one
could be because EMI wanted to use the red/white EMI
logo rather than the silver/blue one, and no labels were
available at the time.

:NOTE:
The "B" sides songs are played in reverse order to what
the label says. "Lady", the shorter song is always first. It
took 40 years for this to be corrected.

Highest UK chart position: No. 1 :-)

:NOTE:
The runout etchings of the "A"side show "1A-2U", this is
because the first cut "1A-1U" had a fault and couldn't be
used (see pictures 33 and 34).

Please notice the  mis-spelling of Tony Visconti's name
on pictures 7 and 8 of this single. His name has been
wrongly typed as Toni Visconti. Also the brackets
around Marc's name are missing.

The error can be found on both sides or just one side. I
don't believe the price of the error 45 would depend on a
single or double-sided error but either/both would fetch a
higher price than the standard version.

There is another error 45 which has the "B" sides label on
both sides of the single, however the music plays correct,
i.e. Metal Guru.
The error label does not have the brackets around
Marc's name. On my copy the error side label is a lighter
blue than the correct side label. The run-out etchings are
the same.

Highest UK chart position: No. 4

:NOTE:
The accompanying letter states that Chariot Choogle will be released
as a single "next month". Since the single should have been released
on 7th July (cancelled), that puts the release of this test pressing
at early June. Unsure if this is a double sided test pressing or two
single sided test pressings.

The last four pictures are of another test pressing, this copy owned by
Bob Harris. This copy is of two single sided test pressings.
They sold at auction for £2,600 (which included a test pressing of
Telegram Sam) on 26th January 2021.
The album has a date stamp of 29th June 1972

Was Marc playing with the name of his group. He will have probably
seen the name of David Bowie's latest album "The Rise And Fall Of
Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars".

He tries two different names:-
1: Total Wrecks and the Space Cadets
2: The Locamotivehead Dress Sneaker Rino Eared Rollerskated Shop Band

Marc wrote all the text on the covers but nothing on the labels.

Side 2 - The Slider - 3:19

Recorded at Rosenberg Studios, Copenhagen and
Chateau d'Hierouville Studios, Paris.
Produced by Tony Visconti

:Note:
This single was a review or sampler single for the
upcoming LP "The Slider".
It was however only issued in very limited numbers
(possibly 50) and was supplemented by the white hand
written editions (shown).

This white label promo has the matrix number "BLN 1005" which is the
reverse number of the album "The Slider" that this single comes from ;)

Notice my copy (green background) has a side 1 credited to
Warrior Mrtists Ltd. The writer obviously noticed his error after the M.
and changed the M to an A.
The one with the white background has the correct credit of
Wizard Artists Ltd.

the two letters "

Produced by Tony Visconti

Highest UK chart position: No. 4

:NOTE:
Apparently the front and back cover photographs were
taken by Tony Visconti but credit was given to Ringo Starr.

:NOTE:
The 1st two pictures of the front and back are of the
immediately withdrawn sleeve with no red text.

The front and back (5th & 6th pictures) have printing errors.
A big black mark on Marc's right shoulder on the front
which also obscures part of the "T" in T. REX. And a
smaller black triangular mark on his same shoulder on the
back which also obscures part of the"R" in SLIDER.
The black/dark grey is also darker so Marc's right eye is
all black where on the "proper" sleeve there is a hint of
lighter shade, or eyeball around the iris. On the back,
Marc's shoulder where it joins the neck is totally missing
the line.

Here's a pushout centre that you can't pushout

Here's another oddity from the collection of Bobby Haslett.
Nothing unusual I hear you say,
a solid labelled record that's been stamped.
Well yes but in this case the stamps came first.

Here's a similar yet totally different oddity.
A pushout labelled record that has blue rings.
The blue rings are under the text as are the fingerprints.

Here is a white label test pressing of
the single with Marc's own handwriting

Here are two white label test pressing of
the single with more information written

There are five versions of the runout etchings:-

#1 = This etching is from the test pressing
Note the error in "YMARC", the M is mispressed
and there is a larger gap between the hyphen and the 1.

#2 = Note the errors in "YMARC" it appears like "Y  YYYY  MARC"
with the 4 Y's almost on top of each other.
Also "CHROME", which would have been "CROME" but the cutting
engineer saw his mistake as soon as he added the R and changed it to a H.

#3 =  Note the extra Y's have been removed from "YMARC"
but a space has appeared between the M and the A.

#4 = The gap between M and A of YMARC has been reduced.

#5 = This has a thinner stamp of YMARC and a use of 2U rather than 1U.
(although, the 1 remains, so it looks like a 12)
and the error on CHROME has been fixed with a whole new etching.

This copy is badly pockmarked and is missing the slightly
raised ring near the centre. Is this an Irish version ?
Thanks Patrick Mclarnon for these images

Here's an oddity. Notice the pre-1967 DECCA label design in the
background on side 1 and the pre-1969 RCA Victor label design on side 2.
This copy has the 3rd type of runout etchings.

I've altered the colour settings so you can
see the Decca and RCA Victor labels clearer

British market. Thanks to Bobby Haslett for finding this one.

As with the Metal Guru single above this was no doubt a

Herein lies the difference between the Metal Guru and
Solid Gold... singles, try and find a "solid" Solid Gold

I doubt very much you'll find one.

a printing flaw on the A side EMI logo.

There is a copy of the single which has no internal text on
the "A" side (see opposite). This was because in order to
cut costs large amounts of "basic" labels were printed for
the use of various future singles and then the inner text
was added at a later date. The "B" side is normal.

8 - Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends

:NOTE:
A compilation album released by Cube records to no doubt cash in on
the popularity of the Solid Gold Easy Action single..
The green £1.49 on the front is a sticker and is notoriously hard to remove.

NOTE 2: (info from Philip S. Robinson)
1. Hot Love (3:03) (Usually 4:52) Coda severely edited (La-Las etc) fades
to finish rather than conventional ending.
2. Jeepster (3:30) (Usually 4:10) Omits verse 4 entirely, jumps to 'Girl I'm
just a vampire' line in coda after verse 3.
3. Get It On (3:16) (Usually 4:24) Goes straight to coda after middle 8
instrumental break.

Promotional flexi single

A two-sided flexi disc that was given to all fan club members.

Includes a couple of poems and some Christmas banter,
and a couple of intros and outros of T. Rex tunes.
Recorded by the group in November at Tony Visconti's
flat in London. Bill Legend was absent so Tony covered
for Bill.
Helping out with backing vocals was Alphi O'Leary
(Marc's chauffeur and bodyguard) and
Mickey Marmalade (Tour manager)

Produced by Tony Visconti
Probably pressed in Holland.
