What was Glam Rock? Glam rock was a style of rock music most popular from 1971-1975 and heavily (but not solely) guitar based. The genre was characterized by artists who tended to wear a lot of makeup and feminine style clothing while performing rock music. This was not always the case but it did grab the headlines, so if you wanted to be noticed, you wore it. The core early glam rockers include the bands T. Rex, The Sweet, Slade, Gary Glitter, Suzi Quatro, and Wizzard. Quite a few other bands flirted with Glam to gain notoriety and head off in other directions once fame had been grabbed, notably David Bowie, Roxy Music, Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, Alvin Stardust, Mott the Hoople etc. Some other groups were thrust into Glam without ever being Glam, groups like Chicory Tip, Mud, The Rubettes, Elton John, David Essex, and Sparks. You will notice that most of the above mentioned bands were British with the main exception of Suzi Quatro who was brought to Britain and based here by producer Mickie Most. The American version of Glam Rock, artists such as Alice Cooper, New York Dolls, Lou Reed, well... they were just heavy metal groups with too much eye-liner on lets be honest.
